PERSONALITY: In the beginning, Cu Chulainn answered to the call of the grail with a wish to fight a valiant fight to the death (a wish that was never granted to him). His original master, Bazett Fraga McRemitz, was betrayed by Kotomine Kirei and he was forced under his command with stolen command seals. While he despises Kotomine and wants to revenge his fallen master, he follows his orders in the fifth Holy Grail War. He dislikes people who use cowardly tactics to win so working for a man like that goes against his principles and pride.
Lancer is a fierce warrior with a lot of pride. He enjoys the thrill of the fight when he has an opponent that feels worthwhile. There's a lot of confidence behind his movements and he isn't afraid to run head first onto the battlefield. However, under Kirei's command he's mostly a scout, identifying masters and their servants. Whenever he does get to fight, he enjoys it, but also obeys when he needs to retreat, even if he'd like to continue fighting.
As a warrior, he fights in a way that shows respect to his opponents: with all that he has. While he's quick to work himself into a frenzy while fighting he never forgets what he's supposed to be doing. He's someone who will hold onto a promise until he's fulfilled them. However, given the choice, he will not back down from a fight even if he's clearly losing. Even in the legend he refused to die lying down and instead tied himself so he could die standing.
Rules are something that Lancer usually follows strictly. While he despises killing innocent people he was still willing to go through the trouble of killing a bystander who accidentally witnessed a fight between servants. He's very keen on finishing his missions and remains professional in his work. He is willing to fight until the end, whether it's from himself or for his master, but will also honor those who forfeit a fight by not attacking them.
While he gets mad at being called a dog, he really fits the nickname by being loyal. If he chooses to protect someone he does so until the very end. At first he was ordered to keep Rin Tohsaka safe but after he got attached to her, he made it his personal wish and mission. He disobeyed Kirei when he told him to kill her. Even after he was forced to kill himself by command seals, with the help of his battle continuation ability he protected Rin once more by killing Kirei and injuring Shinji Matou. He died with a smile on his face after being able to ensure she survived.
Lancer may be a fierce warrior, but outside battle he's easy to get along with. He comes across as a nice and agreeable young man who has a very playful attitude. He starts respecting Shirou Emiya when, instead of asking Lancer who his master is, he demands Lancer keeps his hands off Rin. He enjoys teasing Rin and seeing her interesting reactions. He seems to have a carefree attitude towards most things in life. He enjoys relaxing with hobbies like fishing and hunting and also enjoys dating women (even if he complains to have a bad luck with them).
He also has quite a temperament, getting easily angry when he's insulted or someone does injustice. He has a hard time dealing with Archer (EMIYA) because he's a fake hero with no pride in anything he does. He's even motivated more into helping Rin and Shirou when it promises him a fight against Archer which he throws himself into with all his might.
Cu Chulainn's legend is full of tragedies, but he doesn't regret his life as a whole. His only real regret would be never fulfilling his promise to his master (Scáthach) who trained him to kill her. His spear killed many, even his loved ones, his best friend and his own son, but never the woman it was meant to. However, he still regrets nothing in life and doesn't wish to return to change it one bit. What life had in store for him is another journey he was willing to take when he chose to answer the call of the grail.
